Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup
Folkestone
Efforts are being made to turn the Harbour branch and viaduct into a
private line, with Parry People Mover-style lightweight railcars, part of
the new town development plan.
Shillingstone
The North Dorset Railway Trust wants to reconstruct the 16-lever Somerset
& Dorset Shillingstone signalbox and is appealing for information on its
internal layout.
http://www.shillingstone.addr.com/signal_box_restoration.htm
Main Line Electrification
The October edition of the Railway Magazine says the Government plans to
make the Midland Main Line (MML) the priority route for electrification.
The Great Western (GWML) scheme is complicated by Crossrail, Reading
remodelling and the uncertainty over HST replacement, whereas the MML is a
relatively cheap and straightforward project.
London Underground - Jubilee Line Upgrade progress
http://londonreconnections.blogspot.com/search/label/jubilee%20line
London Underground - Metropolitan Line
Commenting on the new air conditioned 'S' stock trains that are being
introduced, TFL Commissioner Peter Hendy said, "To achieve full capacity
increases, it is essential that we get the new signalling system that we
are currently tendering for. This will enable a higher throughput of
trains and faster journeys." Invensys and Bombardier are reported to have
been shortlisted for the sub-surface network resignalling contract.
London Crossrail - Bond Street station
The 300m redevelopment of will get underway in 2011 and when completed in
2017 will deliver: a dramatic increase in capacity ahead of the completion
of Crossrail, a new entrance and ticket hall north of Oxford Street to
increase capacity and provide step free access to both Central and Jubilee
Lines, new escalators and step free access to the new Crossrail statio
which will have entrances in Davies Street and Hanover Square. More than
155,000 passengers currently use the station every day, a figure that is
expected to rise to 225,000 with the arrival of Crossrail.
London Crossrail - Canary Wharf
Pile driving has started as part of the work to build a cofferdam to
retain the dock water. The ticket hall will parallel to and above the
platforms with a five storey access area at each end. Completion is
estimated to be June 2012.
London Crossrail - Charing Cross station
In August scaffolding finally came off the Eleanor Cross which stands
outside Charing Cross main line station. This site also has interesting
information on the history of the twelve crosses erected by King Edward I.

Long Marston
The open day will be held on Sunday 12th September. Negative points this
year are: no train trips and no shuttle buses from nearby stations. Plus
Points: buses going around the huge site for viewing, storage lines opened
up for better photo opportunities, refreshments available, car parking
free.

Manchester Victoria
Network Rail has awarded a contract for the first three stages of the
station upgrade. Work includes a new roof, glazed screen between platform/
concourse, glazed entrance doors and new toilets. Also likely is the
relocation of the ticket office and a centrally located travel centre
whilst the heritage features such as the external facade/canopy and
mosaics will be protected.
Rotherham Central
The 7.6M makeover of Rotherham Central station, which includes a new
station building, lifts and platform canopies, etc, has been delayed
awaiting completion of a temporary scaffolding footbridge. The front
entrance, facing the bus interchange, was at last temporarily closed for
reconstruction in July and access to the platforms is now by a footpath
along the east side of the line and for the northbound platform by the
said footbridge at the south end.

New station Nr Chorley, Lancs
Work is to start in September on a new Northern Rail station at Buckshaw
village on the Preston-Manchester line near Chorley. It will serve the
fast expanding village on the site of the former Euxton ROF which, until
1965, was itself served by an unadvertised station. Completion is
promised by the Autumn of 2011.
Germany-France
The DB Chairman has stated that they are in talks with SNCF over starting
a passenger service from Frankfurt to Lyon and Marseilles.
Israel
Israel Railways has awarded the tender for the second segment of the Tel
Aviv-Jerusalem high-speed line. This segment is the last of four. The
first, from Modi'in to Latrun, was completed in 2009, the second, from
Latrun to Sha'ar Hagai, includes two parallel 3.5km tunnels. Construction
is expected to take 40 months, with the first trains most likely reaching
the capital in 2017. The third and fourth segments are already under
construction.

Azerbaijan
The Azerbaijani Transport Ministry is to intensify work towards the
reconstruction and modernisation of the country's railway infrastructure
by late 2010.
http://en.trend.az/capital/transport/1734109.html
Angola
The ten stations on the Luanda Railway (CFL), under rehabilitation since
2005, will be officially handed over to its owner in the end of the year.

Kenya
Kenya Railways plans to build a 4-mile link from the capital's airport to
the city centre in a bid to ease Nairobi's notorious traffic jams.
http://af.reuters.com/article/investingNews/idAFJOE67F0K820100816
Kenya-Uganda
The Rift Valley Railways (RVR) and the Ugandan and Kenyan governments have
signed a revised concession pact to pave way for the release of about
$250m to boost operations along the Kenya-Uganda line.
http://www.newvision.co.ug/D/8/13/730089
Malawi-Zambia
Construction of the Chipata-Mchinji rail line project between Zambia and
Malawi (initiated by the Kenneth Kaunda administration in the late 1970s)
started in 1983 but was abandoned in 1990. The late president Levy
Mwanawasa revived the project in 2006 and the line was opened on Friday
27th August 2010 by the current leader President Banda.

China/Thailand
The 21st Century Herald reports that China and Thailand are studying the
possibility of jointly building two railway projects, citing Piamsak
Milintachinda, Thailand's ambassador to China. One of the projects would
be a line from Thailand's Nong Khai to the Chinese city of Kunming, which
would also connect Laos and may include lines to Malaysia and Singapore.
China and Thailand are also studying a possible 150 mile high-speed line
within Thailand between the cities of Bangkok and Rayong.
Cambodia/China/Laos/Myanmar/Thailand/Vietnam
At present these six nations' national railway systems do not link up
except for a line that connects China and Vietnam, and Laos has no rail
network at all. On 20th August a plan was agreed that says the most
viable route would stretch from Bangkok to Phnom Penh, then Ho Chi Minh
City and Hanoi, and finally up to Nanning and Kunming, largely using
existing lines or those already under construction.

Vietnam: North-South railway
The plan to build a north-south high-speed railway to connect Hanoi and Ho
Chi Minh City (reported in Raildate in May) has hit a snag following an
unusual move by the Communist parliament not to approve it for further
study.
